About Osteopathic Medicine

Osteopathic medicine is a complete system of medical care. It is a holistic philosophy, a science, and an art.

The holistic philosophy states that people are composed of body, mind, and spirit. Each is important in health. The philosophy also states that the body has the ability to heal itself, and the role of the physician is to simply enable that healing. The philosophy also emphasizes the interrelationships of the body’s anatomic structure and function, in health and disease.

The science of osteopathic medicine contains all aspects of the human identity – anatomy/embryology, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology/immunology, pharmacology, and behavioral medicine.

The art of osteopathic medicine is the clinical application of the philosophy while providing relationship-centered care – hands on patient care.

Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) focus on preventative care. Instead of just treating specific symptoms or illnesses, they treat the whole body.
